Bottled Water Vs Tap Water

Most people can detect the taste and odor of chlorine in tap water and are also concern about the quality of municipal water. Many people are turning to bottled water either for its taste and the piece of mind that it is cleaner and safer for drinking. Is it cleaner as you think it is?

Not necessarily. Natural Resource Defense Council conducted a four-year review of the bottled water industry and safety standards that govern it, including a comparison of national bottled water rules with national tap water rules, and independent testing of over 1,000 bottles of water. Their conclusion is that there is no assurance that just because water comes out of a bottle is any cleaner or safer than water from the tap. And in fact, an estimated 25% or more of bottled water is really just tap water in a bottle - sometimes further treated, sometimes not.

Further more, bottled water usually sits in the bottle for a while before consumption, water is stale and turns acidic, which is not healthy for the body. Plastic bottle when left under direct sun light or in high room temperature can leach bad chemical that harm your health also. People like to carry their water in the bottles, leave it the car, which during the day, is right under the sun and it is hot. No one should drink water that has been left in the car, especially women. The heat causes toxins from the plastic to leak into the water and doctors have found these toxins in breast tissue of breast cancer patients. Studies have also shown that chemicals called phthalates, which are known to disrupt testosterone and other hormones, can leach into bottled water over time. Another study found that water that had been stored for 10 weeks in plastic and in glass bottles contains phthalates, suggesting that the chemicals could be coming from the plastic cap or the plastic bottle. If you are using a bottle dispenser at home or the office, the next time you change the bottle, reach in you hand and feel the bottom of the dispenser and you will find it slimy at the bottom. Are you sure you will still want to drink it?

Un-filtered tap water is not good to drink, and bottled water is some time not any better, what do we do? You may ask. To protect our own health, installing a quality water filter that will remove all the contaminants from the tap water is the safest and most economical solution. Fresh water that is full of oxygen when you need it. Just fill the glass or stainless steel bottle when you need to carry water with you. You will save money, the environment, and most importantly, your health, over time.
